When the pandemic started, I knew the gyms were going to close as soon as we went into lockdown. I would go to the gym around five times a week after work and at the weekends to train, it was part of my routine. The gym kept my mind busy and stress-free. I find sitting at a desk all day my brain is tired, but my body still had energy.
PureGym was one of the last gyms to close and when it did, I tried to get my hands on a set of dumbbells and a barbell. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. People’s gyms that already closed got their hands-on weights and when I tried the price seemed to of jumped up massively. The demand was high, but the stock was low. £100 for 5KG dumbbells sounded ridiculous. I thought to myself, what am I going to do? How will I keep up my fitness?
I started completing HITT workouts every morning and going on four-mile walks daily, but it was not enough. I did not feel the same. I started running with my partner, we ran without any goal for several weeks. I time every workout on my apple watch and we were struggling to get past 2.5K and for me, that wasn’t enough. I need a challenge. How am I going to get to 5K I thought?
I saw that a lot of people I follow on Instagram rave about ‘Couch to 5K’. Couch to 5K goes on for nine weeks and I am now on week 5. The app allows you to build up your stamina week on week. I found weeks 1 & 2 extremely easy mainly because we had already started running. As time goes on it gets harder but easier at the same time. It feels like your achieving something every time you run. You get exhausted, your legs get tired and you want to stop. HOWEVER, you want to succeed. Power through to achieve each run because each one is an accomplishment.
