My Placement Year
Placement years allow students to embark on a year-long internship working in the field of their study to gain experience in their chosen industry. Taking a year out of university to work full time is a popular choice, it improves employability skills and business acumen, roles are highly competitive, but I knew it’s what I wanted to do.
In August 2020 I started working at NT as the Marketing Executive for my placement year at university. I study Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations at Birmingham City University and chose to partake on a year in industry at the beginning of my course to gain experience in the workplace. There’s no guarantee that you will secure a placement, but my university were extremely supportive throughout the process.
Over the last year I have been responsible for creating awareness of NT Assure’s brand, improving our social media presence, and producing content for, and maintaining the website; alongside lots of everyday marketing activities.
My favourite aspect of marketing is creating visual content for our marketing communications, for example the animated explainer videos that I have created to provide clarity on upcoming legislations and NT Assure’s solutions. My graphic design skills have come on leaps and bounds as I have been given complete creative freedom to make whatever I want, I appreciate the opportunity to take the marketing completely into my control and learn from my mistakes to get where I am today.
The team at NT Assure have been delightful to work with over the past year, the senior management team have been especially supportive, encouraging me throughout (even during my occasional mishap).
I had to spend the majority of my year working from home due to the country falling in and out of lockdowns. I had 3 months in the office before we made the decision to work from home in October to keep everyone safe. I hadn’t envisioned spending most of my placement working from my living room, but the team were extremely accommodating, checking in on me and making sure I was all set.
Since May I have been back in the office with the team and since them time has flown by, this summer has been very busy with the world reopening and hospitality finally able to trade at full capacity. It has been an eventful year within the industry due to several lockdowns so there have been plenty of stories to share and article to write.
I started back at university a couple of weeks ago and will continue supporting the marketing team at NT each week. I can’t wait to get stuck into my studies and get back into the uni lifestyle. This year at NT has allowed me to unlock my potential and I am very grateful for the opportunities given to me.
