Today is the 1st October 2021 meaning that the The Food Information (Amendment) Regulations 2019 have come into force. The legislation has been introduced to protect allergy sufferers and ensure they have confidence in the food they purchase and eat.
You will now see businesses providing a full ingredients list and allergen labelling on foods packaged for direct sale (PPDS). The following will now be clearly displayed on food packaging:
- Name of the food
- Full ingredients
- Allergenic ingredients emphasised (either in bold, italics, or another colour)
These changes now apply to FBO’s in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This amendment was brought about following the tragic death of Natasha Edan-Laperouse. Her parents campaigned hard for this change to the law after she died suffering an allergic reaction to an undeclared ingredient in a baguette. Their efforts have ensured that the government put in place stronger laws to protect customers and give assurance in the food products they choose to buy.
This is a huge step forward towards giving customers assured food safety, access to product food information, and protection to individuals with allergens and/or intolerances.
